Mark Schaller

Australian painter

(b. 1962, Hamburg. Germany: arr. Aust. 1962)

Mark Schaller’s rise as a leading figure on the Melbourne art scene is well based on his foundation membership of the ROAR group – an influential movement that now seems to have won its place in history as the sequel to the figurative expressionist tradition that began at Heide fifty years ago. Most art movements are over almost from the time they are first named. Hence, now post-ROAR, Mark Schaller has developed into a rugged individual, a true artistic polymath, whose restless creative spirit spreads across a number of disciplines such as ceramics, glass, sculpture, painting, and more recently, printmaking. Schaller’s view of the world is a humanist one that places humankind at the centre of a universe full of wondrous creations. It is a clear vision genuinely in awe of nature’s fecundity.
